Meet The Fellows 2016

Maria Babińska

Maria Babińska, born and raised in Warsaw she is a rising senior at the University of Warsaw. In 2013 she obtained her Bachelor's degree in Applied Social Sciences and now she is working on her Master's thesis in Sociology, researching the uses of collective memory in the anti-refugee discourse. Maria is also studying Psychology and she is currently an exchange student at the Catholic University of Louvain la Neuve (Belgium). Next year she is planning to pursue a Ph.D. in Social Psychology and study anti-muslim prejudice. Throughout her studies Maria participated in various research projects concerning collective memory and intergroup relations. Currently, she is a research intern at the Social Psychology Department at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles. She speaks English, French, Spanish and has a basic knowledge of Hebrew. In her spare time, Maria loves to read non-fiction literature and playing with her dog.



Paulina Banasik

Paulina graduated with honors from Jagiellonian University (Cracow) in 2014 with a master’s degree in Cultural Studies with specialization in Comparative Studies of Civilizations. Her main focus during studies was on the topics related with the immigration phenomenon and cultural identity. She has written her thesis about strategies of identity adapted by persons raised in binational families in Poland. Results of her research will be published this year in a joint publication. After graduation she spent a year in Southern Spain where she worked as a volunteer in Cepaim Foundation whose main objective is to promote a model of inclusive, intercultural society by providing help to immigrants, asylum seekers and by developing integration programs. In Spain she took part in numerous courses such as: Intercultural Training, Human Rights Observation, Diversity Management. She also participated in international seminar organized in Ukraine on inclusion of IDPs/refugees in hosting communities.


Kamila Baranowska

Kama, Warsaw addict, translator and professional tourist, graduated from Linguistics at University of Warsaw and Tourism faculty at Warsaw Physical Education. Quite fresh in a social field, but the decision to get involved was very thought through and conscious. It’s started only two years ago that she has found herself at the turning point and decided to devote her time and energy to  the things that matter. Through this time, she has begun to familiarize herself with the socio-political climate of  Warsaw. She was a volunteer in the ResHumanae foundation which helps people diagnosed as HIV positive, she has acted as a volunteer in the Clubhouse International in Warsaw, translated texts and website content  for the HAART Foundation based in Kenya. During autumn she took a part in a Szlachetna Paczka project being a team leader of the volunteers.  In February 2016, she began translating a project for PAH organisation.


Marek Beresiński

Marek is a social sciences enthusiast who studied Psychology at Cracow University. He has been involved in Academic Research about the impact of gender on social competence for the last year. He has experience in marketing, revenue management, psychology and administration. Marek's current goal of becoming experienced social activist and designer of social campaigns has certainly opened up new opportunities to build skills in this area. He is passionate about multiculturalism, gender roles in society, global and local culture.


 Aleksander Bucholski

Aleksander Bucholski is based in Poznan and is a soon-to-be graduate in Law at Adam Mickiewicz University. He also spent a semester abroad at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in The Netherlands. As a Law student, an IB Alumnus and a person of multinational background, who also cares about his local community's wellbeing, Aleksander has been involved in numerous initiatives aiming to reconcile his fields of interest. As a member of an urban movement he has influenced local policies and even run for a council seat. The interest in multiculturalism resulted in collaboration with Poznan-based Migrant Info Point. As a wannabe lawyer he collaborated e.g. with a Poznan-based legal aid centre and the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights. Recently he has been seeking to respond to the rising violence against immigrants in Poznan. After finishing that project, he would like to work with migrants in the UK and to pursue a Ph.D. there.


 Levke Jana Burfeind

Levke Jana Burfeind was born and raised in Germany and is currently completing her Bachelor's Degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology and Communication Studies at the Free University of Berlin. She also spent two semesters abroad at McGill University in Montréal, Canada. During high school, she spent a year as an exchange student in Riobamba, Ecuador and after graduation, she volunteered for twelve months at the Mukisa Foundation in Kampala, Uganda. Levke engages as a member in the work of Amnesty International and actively supports Divest Movements at universities. At the moment, her interests lie at the intersection of Anthropology and Environmental Studies and she recently researched questions of nutrition, food security and sustainability. In her free time, Levke enjoys to travel and she appreciates encounters with different people and inspiring conversations.


Angie Del Arca

A New Orleans native, Angie Del Arca recently graduated from Bard College with a degree in Film & Electronic Arts. She spent a semester abroad in Berlin, Germany and quickly discovered her passion for traveling and cultural exchange. Angie is a Posse Scholar, Gilman International scholar, and has won several awards in addition to Humanity In Action. As the co-founder of the Bard immigration group, Angie has worked to engage the Bard community in dialogue about immigration and how it intersects with other issues. For the past three years she served as a homework tutor for first-generation immigrants in Rhinebeck, NY. Angie also volunteers as a facilitator with the Community Expressive Arts Project, where she leads workshops off-campus. Angie plans to combine her passion for film and social justice by directing films highlighting the unique stories that are often underrepresented in our society.


Michalina Ferencz

Michalina is a first-year student of Cultural Anthropology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. Coming from a borderland city resulted in her special interest for the narratives of post-socialist Polish collective identity. Recently, concerned with the shocking scale of gender-based violence in Poland, she co-funded #MamyGlos, a socially-oriented start-up non-profit that empowers Polish female teens and promotes women's rights. She likes pop-culture and pretty things.



 Carlos Flores

Born in California but raised in Honduras for a significant part of his life, Carlos Flores is a rising junior at Harvard University with a major in Government. Since 2013, Carlos has worked with several Honduran-based media outlets (online and televised) that cover human rights and political issues. His coverage has included crime/corruption cases in Honduras, migration at the US-Mexico border, and hearings at the U.S. Supreme Court. He also works with several NGOs that campaign for the elimination of impunity in Honduras and has contributed research for Honduras' civil society reports for the U.N.'s Universal Periodic Review. Next year, Carlos plans to return to Honduras, where he will be using media to gather evidence to facilitate the prosecution of human rights abuses in domestic and international judicial institutions. After Harvard, Carlos plans to obtain a Master's degree and study human rights/environmental law.


 Daria Goriacheva

Raised up in Kyiv, Daria completed graduate degrees in German and European Studies at NaUKMA (Kyiv), in Politics at FSU (Jena), and in International Relations and European Studies at CEU (Budapest). Aiming to broaden her worldview, she spent a year volunteering in China, where she taught English to underprivileged Chinese in Guangdong province. Since she returned to Europe, Daria has worked on behalf of migrants, providing humanitarian assistance to internally displaced Ukrainians as well as providing support for asylum seekers and refugees in Germany. Now Daria coordinates a conflict-recovery project, which helps rehabilitate conflict-affected children and youth living in the war-torn areas of Ukraine and increase their capacity for non-violent communication. 

Kasia Górnicka

Kasia graduated from University in Białystok where she obtained a master’s degree in Law with specialisation in Criminal Policy. In her master thesis she focused on euthanasia as an interdisciplinary problem in the context of international law and human rights. Her academic interests are mainly oriented on international public law, human rights and art. She graduated from University of Warsaw with a Bachelor's degree in history of art. During her scholarship at the Université Paris-Sud 11 (Faculté Jean Monnet) she has gained strong foundation in legal analysis and international law. Moreover, She completed and internship in the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights in Law Department. She is fluent in English and French and conversational in German. Katarzyna is interested in art as an important platform, which can have a great impact on people in the context of human rights.


Alexandra Granato

A recent graduate of the College of William and Mary, Alex Granato majored in Film/Media Studies and Race, Gender, and Cultural Studies.  Over the past few years, she has been involved with a number of on-campus organizations, particularly the Reeder Media Center and the improvisational theater group, IT.   She has recently completed an honors thesis on the role of comedy in discussion of the Bill Cosby sexual assault allegations, published an article regarding homelessness in residential Los Angeles, and curated a collaborative art exhibit of work from rural Cuban and local Virginia students.  This past semester, she was elected into Phi Beta Kappa and in the coming years, hopes to explore work in freelance journalism, documentary filmmaking, and the nonprofit sector. She aspires to use her knowledge of the media to spread powerful messages about human rights and social issues. 



 Joanna Kopacka

Joanna Kopacka holds a BA in Art History from the University of Warsaw. Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Holocaust Studies at the University of Haifa, she is writing her thesis about liberation photography and different memory narratives in post-war Germany and Poland. During her studies in Israel, she interned in Yad Vashem and participated in the project of volunteer work with the community of Holocaust survivors. While in Poland she was involved in coordinating the first field survey held by "Matzeva Project". She was also assisting the chief curator of contemporary art exhibition entitled "Women Commentators" and collaborated with Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation. As the involvement in the project "Mam Prawo Wiedzieć (I Have a Right to Know)" triggered her interest in non-governmental activity and human rights advocacy, she hopes to continue working and contributing to this field in the future. 



Angie Liao

Angie Liao is a rising senior at New York University. In her former life, she attended the Kirov Academy boarding school in Washington, D.C. and trained intensively to be a professional ballet dancer. In years following, she has found a new path of passion: human rights.  In her first year at NYU, Angie was named a Global Human Rights Fellow. She travelled to Beijing to work with migrant workers and researched China's civil and political rights situation. While studying abroad in Sydney, she worked closely with Australia's asylum seeker population through the National Immigration Support Services, where she founded an English literacy program, for which she received a President's Service Award this spring. She has been honored to present original research on justice and rights around the world at conferences in Washington, D.C., Beijing, Seoul, and Sri Lanka. She dreams of returning to Sri Lanka on a Fulbright after graduating. 


Joy Liu

Joy Liu is a 2014 graduate of Duke University, where she double majored in Biology and Public Policy Studies. Since graduation, she has been working on palliative care research in Singapore. She is interested in medicine (particularly end-of-life issues), global health, and health policy. Exploring these interests have taken her to parts of East Africa, Asia, and South America on global health research and service. She has also worked on health equity domestically as an intern for the federal Office of Minority Health and campus leader for the student arm of Partners in Health. She will be starting medical school in the fall. Joy was born in China and calls Southern California home. In her free time, she loves to read, write, draw, and travel.

Tadeusz Michrowski

Graduate of International Relations with Contemporary Diplomacy specialty, Tadeusz recently came back from his European Voluntary Service in Canary Islands, Spain where he promoted mobility of youth. Before EVS he worked for half a year as anti-money laundering analyst in Citibank but have found it to dull for him. In December he wrote exam for Young Professionals Programme in United Nations. Now he is doing his traineeship at United Nations Information Center in Warsaw and he is thinking pretty seriously about pursuing career in UN. His passion is story-telling and writing; he wrote articles, reportages, plays, short stories and - recently - he published a book. Whenever he has few minutes of spare time, he tries to contribute to Polish Center For African Studies web page with his analysis of situation on the continent. 

Heather Murray

A native of Gainesville, FL, Heather is a rising senior at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a major in Accounting and a minor in Criminal Justice. Heather works in a number of capacities at university, city-wide, and state-wide levels to create practical and sustainable solutions for the needs of under-served communities. The scope of her work includes sexual assault prevention, food deserts in urban neighborhoods, and housing access for homeless veterans. In her spare time, Heather contradances, hikes, and binge-watches Netflix. After graduating in May of 2017, Heather plans to seek a Master's International of Public Administration and combine coursework with service in the Peace Corps as an advisor to a business or NGO advisor. Long-term, she hopes to work to improve education access; she believes that education can be an equalizer, capable of transcending socially constructed boundaries to create a more peaceful world.


Judyta Nędza

Judyta was born and raised in Polish mountains. Obtained bachelor in Journalism from the University of Warsaw but decided to engage in human rights sphere in the further education. Currently enrolled in the MA program in Human Rights and Democratization in Caucasus in two locations - Yerevan and Kyiv, researching the implementation of anti-discrimination law in labor code of Ukraine. As a volunteer in the LGBT rights NGO - Lambda Warsaw, Judyta seeks to address sexual minorities rights. For few years professionally and privately connected with Caucasus, where she was working for rural community development NGO. 

Sara Nowacka

Born in Bytom, raised in Piekary Śląskie, living and studying in Kraków, Sara is a student of Jagiellonian Univeristy. She graduated from Arabic Language and Literature department and is continuing the program of Arabic studies as her master's studies. Sara gained a lot of experience in a multicultural society participating in Camp America Program in 2015 and taking the Arabic language course in Cairo in 2016. She works as a volunteer in the legal aid center, where she helps in translating legal documents for refugees from Arabic countries. She hopes to bind her education and experience with Human Rights issues to teach young people about the benefits of multicultural society, threats of discrimination and hate speech as well as to help endangered social groups in the Middle East and African countries.

 Adam Pakulski

Born and raised in Poznań, Poland. He has a Canadian origin, which decided to explore after high school graduation. Adam is currently a law student at the University of Warsaw, with interests involved in activity of non-governmental organizations dealing with human rights and equal treatment. He co-organized The March of Equality in Poznań and was a volunteer in Pride Parade in Warsaw. Actively participates in the events of the association Lambda Warszawa. Socially involved in local community. He was elected by the residents to be the district councilor for the four-year term of office. He is interested in international affairs and political science, plans to deal with prejudice and exclusion of people from various minorities. In his spare time Adam takes part in the queer culture scene events and travels - wide and far as well as across the corners of his city.


Yosef Palanker

Born and raised in orthodox Jewish community in Baltimore, Yosef is studying English at the University of Maryland. As an activist for social justice, Yosef aims to broaden the dialogue of intercultural inquiry through the written and spoken word. He explored sustainability in impoverished areas in Rutland, Massachusetts, addressed human rights violations in Austin, Texas and researched self-empowerment and social inequities in Appalachia, Kentucky . In his free time, Yosef enjoys reading Junot Diaz while backpacking the Appalachian trail. After University of Maryland, Yosef plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Holocaust literature and study the rising trend of antisemitism as we enter this Post-Witness era. 

Andy Post

Andy is a graduating senior at Colorado College in Colorado Springs located 60 miles south of Denver, his home town. Andy majored in Political Science and with minors in Music and English. He has worked with multiple food activism organizations, helping start up Colorado Springs Food Rescue (CSFR), an organization that has redistributed over 400,000 pounds of food that would otherwise have been thrown away to communities in need. His involvement with CSFR has evolved into another student project, Mobile Meals--a food truck that shares meals, culinary training, and food education with communities such as Inside Out Youth Services, an LGTBQ organization near campus. Andy has enjoyed playing keyboard in bands since high school, with focuses on original compositions and communicating in forms other than speech. He recently presented his senior capstone "Media Coverage of Race Riots and the Transformation of the Liberal Label" in Chicago.


Mikołaj Solik

Born and raised in Katowice, Poland, Mikołaj is passionate about Europe, travelling and street photography. Due to the genuine curiosity for the world and for others, it was natural for him to undertake the bachelor in International Relations at University of Warsaw, while he also completed a semester at Sciences Po in Paris, worked for a year in AIESEC and in UNESCO Committee in Warsaw.  He currently is about to graduate in Foreign Affairs of the EU, is keen on MUNs and MEUs, works in 4 students' associations what brings him to many conferences and meetings with ambassadors, scholars and politicians. He envisions for himself second master degree in Cracow and Strasbourg, than an internship in the European Commission or the Council of Europe. His scientific interests involve human rights & humanitarian assistance, European integration and the role of culture and education in public diplomacy and civil society. 

Mariia Veselovska

Her first Master degree in the field of International Relations Mariia got at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine. In her Master thesis she conducted analysis of the USA contribution to the international women rights protection around the world and in Ukraine. Her second Master degree Mariia got at Vilnius University, Lithuania, at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science. Being a member of NGOs “Young Diplomacy” and NGO “CreArt”, she  participated also in a set of international, Ukrainian and Lithuanian conferences and roundtable discussions. Co-founder of the Information-Translation Center in 2014, today Free Voice Information Analysis Center, aimed to reduce the impact of Russian propaganda in Ukraine and abroad by providing truthful and reliable information on the events in Ukraine. She was also founder and manager of a cultural project in Lviv under the auspices of NGO “CreArt”.
